I would definately consult your vet. about this. I am in Ca. too, and even in nice areas their are always risks of wild animals carrying rabies. Anther th ing to consider, is if a dog bites a human being, and is reported, then the dog will need to be tested for rabies... It is a test that is performed on the brain.
I understand that your dog is having liver complications, and may already be compromised. I am certain your vet will let you know what is best for your dog. Getting a wavier is understandable .
