We not only have hawks, but eagles, too: Goldens and Bald. My dogs are not allowed outside by themselves. It's hard, because the yard is fenced ... and they love to romp.
My hubby sits out front a lot (he's disabled) watching the comings and goings of the local squirrel population. The hawks swoop down and carry them off with alarming frequency. Our Bella is only 3.5 lbs. - not much bigger than the squirrels. Puddy is a whopping 6 lbs.
