Not discounting the recommendation your vet gave and fully understand this may be a geographical issue also...but my neighbor hired a behavorist to come in her home...4 hours and it cost $150. Granted the neighbor is still responsible for doing her "homework"...but she says it really made a difference in her dog's behavior. So I'm wondering...if there is someone there whose pricing is a little more reasonable.

Scootie bootie, here, gives consults via email. That may be an avenue to persue also.
