I would just cut him real short. I also cut mine around the neck, as the collar does tend to matt the hair. I haven't cut Misty down yet, but I am thinking about it, as she has two different colors on her back hair. She doesn't matt bad, but I do bathe her once a week and put in conditioner. I brush her teeth and wash out eyes and comb and brush her once a day also. They are a little high maintenance dogs, but worth every bit of it.
