I would never even consider not using a heartworm med. The med is not really a vaccine but it kills any larva that have built up in the dog in the past 30 days.. so it is not worth taking the chance of having to treat one of my babies. I have seen a golden retriever that was treated for heartworm and he lost his teeth and almost died from the treatment. I will never forget that. I use Ivermectin which is the active ingredient in Heartgard. My dogs get 70 mcg every month..it takes only 1 bite of an infected mosquito and the baby can be affected for life. Scares me!!!
