The dewclaws are removed and tails docked at 3-5 days of age. This is done with nothing for the pain. Mine have always cried and broke my heart. Sometimes they don't cry. To me, the day that this needs done is the worst part of having a litter. It is the standard though and the pups are usually over it in a few hours. Mine do cry off and on for almost an hour and then it is just a little whimper here and there. Still....totally heartwreching. My vet stitches the tails and wraps their little feet if the dew claw bleeds. Sometimes they don't. Hope this helps anyone that is curious. All I can say is "be glad it is done by the time you get them as their forever homes".
