We work and keep Bailey in an ex-pen all day - with water and a pee pad in a litter box. You're right - you can't potty train when you're not there - but fortunately, dogs learn to keep their space clean.

Knowing that - I just cleaned her pen every day while she was a puppy - and as they said, she eventually learned to hold it. On the rare occasion she needs to pee during the day - she goes in the litter box - otherwise, she pees outside.

I don't believe that her staying in a pen inhibited our house potty training - as we accomplished that in 2 months.
