Do you have a room, such as the kitchen where you can leave him? Is he pad trained? We leave Gabby for 8 hours sometimes, but she is in the large kitchen with her food, water, potty pad, toys, etc... Other than chewing on a rug, she has been fine. We did start off just giving her a small part of the kitchen, and then would move the gate further away after while, so she is trained where to go potty. Depends on the shape of the kitchen, but we have a long l-shape kitchen.
