Was he holding the leg up before the operation? My current foster was..so I think some of it is habit too...I am taking him for slow walks trying to get him to put some pressure on the leg..when he moves faster he automatically puts it right up....

He is putting it down a little when standing and yes, he was holding it up before the surgery, especially when walking fast or after napping. Did the area of the surgery get pretty swollen as well for you? It seemed pretty swollen yesterday, but going down a bit today.
