I think some dogs have an internal clock where they just know what time it is. One of our family dogs when I was a kid knew when it was 3 p.m., dinner time for him, and he would run to his dish at the same time every day. We finally figured out that he knew that when the theme song for General Hospital came on, it was 3 p.m. -- so this was his que! My current pup has a built-in two-hour timer: I am a napper and am capable or sleeping for hours, but Archie starts barking at me after two hours (on the dot!), insisting I get up.
