There are AKC sponsored fun matches you can enter...they say "fun"..but it is a disciplined show...just no points. Also, local handling classes are great to learn..
The best show dog starts as a puppy...it can be very hard to teach a dog discipline after none had been required. I have no doubt in my mind if I took Becca in the ring, she would look at me as if I was out of my mind wanting her to stand on a table, while a judge goes over her...she is used to people walking up to her and giving her a kiss and a pat on the head. With a lot of work, she could show decently, but it would have been so much easier if I had trained her from 12 weeks on...and she can still be a spoiled pet..but one who knows what is expected of them in the ring.
