This is more great advice. Due to the airport access road, Dulles may be a better option if you are planning on renting a car while you are in town. A possibly cheaper flight into Dulles and renting a car may make better sense than a more expensive flight to Reagan. Dulles is often cheaper.
I second staying away from BWI. It's just too much of a drive. Plus, you won't get a good enough price over Dulles to justify it.
Lastly, that's good to know about animals on the metro. I wasn't sure on their policies. In that case, an airport taxi from Reagan won't cost you much to get to Alexandria (it's around 5 miles).
