I personally would stay clear of puppies from a twelve pound dam or sire but, that is because I breed my Yorkies from time to time praying to maybe find my BB show hopeful. That isn't to say that a bigger Yorkie doesn't make a wonderful pet because they truely do, in fact I currently have a little girl that I am guessing will be around 8 - 9 pounds. She she is healthy and looks every bit the Yorkshire she is, she is just bigger.
All of my females that I breed are no less in weight than 5.5 pounds with my biggest girl at 6.5 pounds, and my sire is 5.5 pounds. These are the weights that I feel comfortable with and the weights that I try to obtain in future babies. Sure from time to time like many others I get one such as the puppy I mentioned above or sometimes even one on the small side (a runt) but I do not purposely breed for this. I get very uncomfortable when I have one born that is very tiny and it just causes me too much stress.
I try very hard not to condem those who breed bigger or smaller but, on the other hand I don't believe that these types of weight correctly represents what the true Yorkshire Terrier is meant to be.
In the end though I honestly believe that the size matters most in the show ring and when you are breeding. If you are just looking for a pet to love and enjoy then a larger Yorkie fits the bill excellent.
Again this is all just my opinion and I hope that everyone understands this, we are all different in likes and dislikes and I myself don't find myself qualified in judging who's ways are right or wrong.
