Default Sugarless gum can be toxic to your Yorkie

My brother and sister in law have a Yorkie named Molly, and a Lab/Border Collie mix named Callie. Bob emailed me two nights ago that when they got home they found that one or both of the dogs had eaten a pack of gum. I seemed to remember reading that sugarless gum can hurt dogs, so I googled it -- and, long story short, Molly is still in the hospital on an IV almost 48 hours later. Callie has done fine, and is at home, but the gum had more of an effect on Molly because of her size. Thankfully, they treated her right away -- as I've read that some people don't realize what's happened until it's too late.

The gum they chewed (Trident) contained Xylitol, which apparently can cause liver failure, extreme swings in blood sugar and other life-threatening effects.

Apparently Altoids, some toothpastes and jello gelatins contain the same ingredient, so I wanted to spread the word to BE CAREFUL when leaving these things around the house....

Send good thoughts to Molly, if you would.... Thanks.
