Default Jockey's brother

I have Jockey's brother, Buster, now 5 months old. Buster was not pee pad trained either and we are crate training. We have an extra small wire crate, lined with a little blanket - he has been fine in it from the beginning (hasn't cried) but he does poop in it at night. He's taken out as late as 1:30 a.m. and then at 6:15 a.m. but rarely makes it through without pooping. It's already very small but maybe it should be made even smaller.... We just got an ex-pen and put it outside. We're trying to use the clicker method - take him to the ex-pen to pee and poop, click, give him a treat and then let him play in the yard. This didn't work too well this morning because the ex-pen was in the yard and he does not like getting all wet (dew). We moved the ex-pen to the patio so maybe that will help. Should we also use the bell method or just do one step at a time?? Has anyone else had problems with pooping in the crate? Do you think he needs to be taken out between 1:30 and 6:15?
