I've wondered this about the curly and straight hair too. I've seen some with thick curly fluffy hair. Roxie has straight thin hair. It's probably the thickest around her neck. Maybe that's why I haven't had problems with matting. She did get into some burs once. Now that was a matted mess. They were completely pressed into her face near her eye. She happened to walk along the tree line in the backyard and brushed against these dreadful things. It was awful, I didn't want to shave her face so I took conditioner to it and it softened them and I got them all out thank goodness. Curly or straight hair, they're all beautiful sweet little dogs and I'm so blessed to have my own.
For the mats though maybe a good conditioner would help or even a spray like Johnson's No More Tears except in a dog version.
