I agree, the extra weight will be bad for his knees and it may cause him to develop structural problems trying to compensate for the undue strain on his growing joints. I would switch him to adult maintenance and control his intake, and give treats only as a training aid and in very small amounts. Mine get 1/4 cup twice a day and anything they don't eat in thirty minutes gets picked up. I know some don't recommend feeding in the crate but all of mine eat only in the crate, this way I know exactly how much everyone is eating and I can make small changes easily. Of course I make special arrangements for a puppy that is picky or not thriving, but that doesn't sound like a problem in your case!
