My friends maltese had the same thing....they almost lost him.....he was on prednisone also for awhile.....he seems to be doing fine now .....I would also be concerned w him being on prenisone for so long.....my opinion would be to find a holistic vet who may have some ideas how to treat this more naturally and without surgery.....I would definitely look into a raw diet...either way just type in some words in search online and see if there are any alternative ways of treating this.........just my opinion.........all the best to you.......
