I've just learned to knit ( I crochet) and I started with dishcloths to get started. It's a great way to practice and see something come together.
I learned knitting from knittinghelp.com and I found some neat clips on YouTube, too. I joined Ravelry and LOVE finding great patterns for crochet and knit and drooling at everyone else's work
I'm doing a very easy patterned scarf right now that's cast on 24, Knit 2, Knit 1 in back, Purl 1 and repeat, K2 at very end of row and just keep going until you get the length you want
