Hi diggy4, I have the exact same problem with my Trixie... We started off slightly itchy and they gave her meds and shampoo. During a follow up visit she received her Rabie booster and then we went down hill from there. Clearly what ever is going on with her got worse when her immune system went down from the rabie shot. Then she would itch just like you say your dog is doing. We also went the mite root.(although we never got a positive result). We changed her to hills prescription for 4 months nothing. She is now on wellness duck I don't think it's food however the hills was chicken flavor so I could possibly be fighting the whole chicken thing. Trixie gets very itchy after her baths no matter what shampoo I have tried. We have tried almost every thing that has been suggested for relief but nothing really did. Just when I think Yeah it's working it isn't and she goes back into the fits you describe. It is horrible and I feel your pain. I have been going through this since March and did see some signs in October(and a little through the winter) but not to this degree. Trixie has lost a lot of hair on her legs and the sides of her body. It started like broken hair but when she can bite or scratch it with the hair being so short( nothing to cushion it) she went bald and raw. I put a shirt on her to help protect her skin and it has helped her from getting ant secondary infections so far. We are on our third vet and I continue to search for answers. I find little red pimple like bumps on her skin when she has a flare up IDK if thats what you are calling hives.
The only thing I would like to try is Raw or home cooking but unfortunately I just haven't had the time for that. Things are hectic here right now. It could be enviormental? Process of elimination is a slow thing. I have not had Trixie tested for allergies for a couple of reasons. Mainly because I heard they weren't that accurate and the other is I wanted to take a break from the vets. I spent so much and can't afford their guess work. However I ordered a cream from the UK and It's guaranteed to work or your money back. It's all natural and it's for skin issues due to allergies. We are on our third day today I will keep you informed of our progress. She seems to be so much happier since we started and her hair has started to grow already in the two days... I know I still have to find the cause but if she can be comfortable during the process then thats all I can ask for.. I spend my days dedicated to helping her and I watch her closely.. Good luck to you and feel free to PM me if you need to chat about it.
