Hopefully it was instint, and she did not suffer. Congrats on your new baby and she will help in your healing process, I am sure. My Rosey delivered her first litter on 7/16/2008 and 3 1/2 days later we lost the "runt" of the litter, although he was not very old you do get attached real quick, I had to bottle feed him every 3-4 hours and losing him was had, but he is in doggie heaven and will always has a place in my heart, just like your baby will
