I've been struggling with this too, because we *should* make enough money, but we still struggle. I used to wonder how people do it when they buy those big, expensive houses. Maybe they didn't have school loans. Maybe they didn't make the mistake of buying a car they couldn't afford. Maybe they didn't buy their house at the top of the market, or maybe they got a windfall off their last place and cashed out. Just as likely is that they didn't choose to PAY OFF all of their debt like we did and they are just spending all of their money as it comes in. Or more likely is that they are living off of credit and spending money on things they think they "deserve" but not that they can really afford it. My neighbors all have houses twice the size of mine (who needs 6 bedrooms, seriously? and 2 living rooms and a dining room, eat in kitchen and a full basement? but that's all they build here...) and they all drive BMW's. They are NOT doctors, not lawyers... they are leased and mortgaged to the max and can't leave work an hour early when the school calls and their kid is sick (seriously, I'm the one that gets to wait with the kid until they pick him up, sick, an hour after school lets out because we won't send sick kids on the bus, so sorry I ruined your day...) because they can barely afford everything they have financed. These parents complain about buying school supplies and paying $20 for a yearbook and then I see them toting their groceries out to their $48,000 SUV... )

We are selling our tiny townhouse, taking a huge loss on it , and moving to WI where we can afford to buy a small starter house (they don't build those here) on a decent sized lot. It seems a more practical life than here, where people judge you by the size of your car payment.

OK that's my rant. My point is, their priorities are very different than yours...

Although, you'd probably spend as much on gas as on the limo if you all split it. (Not that I know how much limos are..) Just tell them you can only spend $15 on the limo (or whatever) and maybe they will cover the rest since it WAS their idea!!! I bet they just want the limo so they can drink. Can you offer to be the designated driver?
