Ahh, it sounds like you're ahead of me on all those ideas. I like the way you're spreading out the meals over the rest of the day. I do think it would help to try 6 p.m. for the last one. Of course, if you wake up to an accident in the crate, I will deny offering the advice.

And you're probably right about the pack mentality thing.
