I have to agree with the others - please use the leash. I lost my yorkie, Max in our front yard when I took him out to potty as he lunged for a coyote just a few feet away from me. The coyote just grabbed him and took off with him. I don't want anyone else to go through the heartbreak we did. Max always stayed with us outside, but even that did not matter when it came to a predator.
