Many times, people buy AKC registered dogs on limited registration, which means the offspring of that dog can't be registered with the AKC. However, disreputable buyers may still register that dog with other registries like the ACA. and breed them and register the offspring, despite the fact that that dog was never supposed to be bred, which is why the dog was sold on limited registration in the first place.
Often times reputable exhibitor/breeders will have pet quality puppies to sell. Have you tried checking with the YTCA for a breeders list? That would be a good start to finding a reputable breeder.
There may be a price difference in puppies coming from a reputable breeder versus a byb, puppymill or petstore. But if you get an unhealthy dog from the byb, etc, the vet bills will soon make your byb puppy much more expensive than one from a reputable exhibitor/breeder.
