I can just imagine Spicy taking off with a flip flop in his mouth and mom in hot pursuit.
The bitter apple worked for me when TJ decided to trim my plant. He won't touch it now. From the sounds of things.. you may want to buy shares in a flip flop store.. they may give you a discount.
