The key to banding the hair, especially the top knot, is to do it losely and NEVER pull it out...always use band cutting scissors to remove them.
Personally I prefer non-latex bands (1/4 inch) that you can buy off of ebay. Latex bands have a very uneven surface and when stretched, causes voids that trap hair leading to breakage/hairloss. The non-latex bands (polyeurathane) retain their smooth texture even when stretched.
