I feed beef marrow bones. They are extremely safe, inexpensive and almost indestructable. I usually have my butcher cut a beef shank (marrow bone) into 3/4" to 1" slices (see photos). I cook the shank and make a stew or soup for human (or doggie) dinner and clean up the bones before giving them to the kids. When the bones get too slimy I stick them in the dishwasher.
I have been doing this for about 5 years. All the yorkies chew on the bones as well as Boo the Boxer. In that time I have lost a multitude because the kids hide them never to be found, but I have only had to throw one away because it had serious dents in it.
There is a lot of controversary about feeding cooked vs raw bones. This setup has worked for me. These bones have a thick wall 1/4" to 1/3" and do not splinter. |
