All my dogs have always hated the vacuum, and I was determined to get Joey used to it. I would hold him while I vacuumed and when he seemed ok with it, I would place him on the floor and always go away from him with the vacuum, never toward them. This means turning around a lot, but your back should be facing the dog, this way they don't see the vacuum as a threat. He seldom barks at the vacuum anymore, but I'm still quite careful and never push it toward him. With the wand part it's the same thing, push away and use slower stokes with your body between the dog and the wand head.
On the other hand, it could be a good thing, sometimes people become friends because of a common hatred of a certain thing. So maybe the cat and the dog will become buds.
