He doesn't need it in my opinion but it is okay to get it too. Some vets will want to do the test once a year and keep them on the drug year-round. If you do this then Heartgard might pay the bill if he would get heartworm on the preventative. It takes 6 months for heartworms to go to the heart, so maybe that is the reasoning behind them not needing preventative for six months but because you didn't wait nearly that long to start it, the only way I think he would have the disease is if the med isn't working on him. Whatever the case, I think I would just go with the vet on this and do what they say.

By the way, Ellie is on preventative for 7-8 months a year and gets tested once a year.
