Many people recommend never doing this just for the heck of it. Joey had a scooting problem and we took him to the vet, and he showed me how to do this. About every 2 weeks the area would bulge up again and need to be expelled. It's very important to do it correctly or you could push the contents the wrong way and cause in infection. The vet said that some puppies don't push hard enough when pooping and don't empty the glands. Finally Joey outgrew the condition and for the last year and a half hasn't needed them emptied. I would just be on the look out for scooting, that's usually the first clue. Some groomers do this automatically, but many vets don't recommend this unless there's a problem. Have your vet show you what to look for and how to do it correctly.
