When I first got my Jamie I thought he had a cotton coat but it turned out just to be his puppy coat. Once it grew out long enough I trimmed the puppy coat off and he was left with the most beautiful silk coat. If the matts are too bad and you can't get them out with oil, I've just used one side of a pair of tiny scissors to just slice up through the matt. That way you don't have to cut length off but you get the matt out without hurting her.
