I have had two "runts" over the years (one is my current pup) and I think there is often just something special about the little guy in each litter. They have to be a little scrappier to get their share of attention and milk from mama, because the big guys push them around. Archie put on a veritable "floor show" when I went to see him and his two brothers, both of whom were larger than him. He was the one with the most personality; attacking the pee-pee pad and growling, licking my chin and chewing on my rings. He made it impossible to leave him behind! He did have his share of health problems in the beginning --- some due to being so tiny and so active. BUT, he's been well worth it. The other runt I had was a toy poodle, years ago. He weighed a pound and a half when I brought him home and he was healthy as a horse his entire life!
By the way -- Archie weighs 5 pounds now!
RUNTS RULE!
