I think this is a very valid possibility as I have seen this happen many times. I know one Yorkie that became ferral trying to become alpha. The dog would hid, hord food, bite, snarl and only let one person near her. The person that owned her spend over 2000.00 on behavor training and she became the sweetest thing. I wish I still had contact with her as I would get you in touch but I lost contact last year when she moved.
