My girls grew up with a yorkie. They knew at a very early age that they had to be gentle with the dog, and they could not pick the dog up...period! They could (when they were old enough to be gentle) sit on the floor or the couch with the dog in their lap. If you teach them those rules...you will not have any problems. They can still play with the dog and cuddle with him. The kids I worried about (and worry about now with our new puppy) were other peoples kids. If I am not *sure visiting kids will follow the rules, then the dog gets put up away from the visitors...usually in my room with the door closed. I also do this if there are a lot of people (adults or kids) over.

Find another vet...one who will support you by *teaching you and your kids how to be safe with your new puppy...not one who talks down to you.
