Default Potty Training Regression

Darwin is 5 months old, we got him when he was 14 weeks old. He has been such a good boy when it comes to pottying outside and has only had a handful of accidents in the house in the past couple of months. That is until this week...

He escaped the baby gate in the kitchen once this week, and escaped his ex-pen once, both of these times, I had really long days at work and he roamed the apartment freely, peeing wherever he pleased. I didnt think he would escape so the only pee pad available was on the otherside of the gate/pen, which he could not get to. I came home to find him greeting me on the otherside of the door and was SHOCKED! I think he is either climbing over, or hurdling/hopping over. It's just shocking b/c the babygate is tall, and the ex pen is even taller!

So, since he roamed/peed freely in the house 2 days this week, I have no idea where the pee spots are, I've only been able to locate 2 or 3 spots b/c he keeps sniffing them, so I sniffed too, and it smelled icky, I cleaned them and sprayed odor eliminator on them, but I'm sure there are others. He has since peed in front of me in the house twice - once last night, about a foot away from where I was sitting, and again today.

I feel like a huge failure, and feel as though my efforts for the last 2 months have all been a huge waste. My once clean apartment is now sprinkled with doggie pee, and I'm afriad he'll continue peeing everywhere whenever he feels like it.

Should I go back to crating him all day everyday? I thought he was ready for the ex pen, and have more freedom, but if it's going to lead to him peeing all over the apartment, he's going to have to go back into the crate. I just feel so bad for leaving him in there longer than 4-5 hrs b/c he is only 5 lbs and shouldn't have to hold it for so long.

I'm hopeless that he'll ever be potty trained at this point...
