I live in a rental so I can't build a fence (although one is SLOWLY being built right now!) but usually if we're just hanging out in the yard, I have put a metal stake in the middle of the yard with about a 20' tie-out, I just clip that onto her harness and she can wander all around the yard without me following her, but she can't get out of my eyesight. And then of course, she's always tied to something if I need to get to her.
