breeding for $ I had someone email me last week wanting a puppy for breeding so she could breed it and make money. She should only read the threads about the litters we have seen in the last couple weeks, with Lola, and Chloe.
Two years ago I bred one of my girls, Daisy, it was her first litter. One of the pups became detached and she went into labor on day 56. I knew I was in trouble. I took her into the vet , she had to be opened up. She had 5 pups, one survived. Got her home, two days later, her temp is spiking, got to 105. Rushed her to the vet, she had pyrometria. The vet didn't think she'd make it. He had to go back in, she was spayed. I was hand raising her little pup at this point, she stayed at the vet for over a week.
Did i make money?
First vet bill was close to $1000, second was $2500, stud fee with champion stud, was $750. I was lucky the stud owner was gracious enough to not take their right of refusal on the only surviving puppy, which I kept. He's going to be shown.
This is the extreme case of things going wrong and I have had successful litters, but you have to be prepared for the worst case scenario and have the extra $ or good credit card to cover the expenses. Not to mention the foods, vaccinations, tail docking, dew claws, and all the things the mom needs during her pregnancy and afterwards. |
