Yes, false pregnancies really do exist. 17 years ago I had a Lhasa-Poo who fell madly in love with my neutered male Chinese Shar-Pei. Her abdomen swelled up and she even began lactating. My Vet confirmed that she was undergoing a false pregnancy and "terminated" it by spaying her. I was told that some can go full term and even have contractions to deliver.
