It doesn't necessarily mean he was mistreated. It really sounds like he thinks of himself as alpha over your husband and you. You really need to let him know that you and your husband and your children are above him. You need to make him sit or something before giving him his food or treats. You need to make sure you eat something first, go through doors first, etc. It is not being mean to him, just establishing yourself as leaders. One he realizes he doesnt have to worry about protecting you, etc. he will relax and be a better behaved dog. This has been discussed on here a few times before. If you do a search on establishing yourself as alpha you will probably see the threads.
