Maybe you can cut it in stages..
Trim the length first(so its still all pretty much one length) Then, separate the hair into the mohawk section you want & try styling it to see how it goes.. (you'll be able to see how well it will stay before cutting the sides so much shorter) ..that way you dont have to make the commitment of shaving it all off if you dont like it or it doesn't work? -you can just have it shorter but still all the same length?) dont know if that made sense-sorry!
