I am sorry to say that I cannot remember how old you mentioned Luna is. Soon they learn to hold their bladder throughout the night (not too young of an age however) and I think a crate is a great place for them.

If she does whimper in the middle of the night, I found the best thing is to not say a word when you take her out, take her to the potty spot and give a command to go potty. If she hasn't for a few moments then take her back to her kennel and leave her. This way without all the lovey dovey words said, Luna is realizing that night time is not play time so she wont be given a lot of attention.

I think you using her leash is wonderful...That way she doesn't wonder off too far from her designated potty spot.
