I don't know the answer to your actual question, but I do know that Gizmo has dreams and nightmares. He has this little dream bark that he does...really soft, but it's definitely a bark. I've also seen his little paws move like he's running in his dream.
I really wouldn't worry about not waking up. I think he woke you up just fine.
