Newly delivered puppies! I am new to this site and just from reading previous posts, it has already been a hege help. My name is Tiffany. I am a 28 year old stay at home mom. I have 2 daughters and 2 stepsons that we are actively involved with. I am also the mom to my fur baby, Payton. I came across this site a couple of days ago researching information for Paytons pending delivery. Around 11:30 last night she started nesting and panting. She was aggressive (snapped at me when I tried to move her blanket) but at the same time didn't want me out of her sight. She was confused and so was I lol. I stayed up till after 3am waiting and apparently fell asleep, I was jolted awake at 6:20 this morning by hubby hollaring =) I went to the closet (her whelping box) and the 1st pup was half out.
This was Paytons first litter and my first time whelping. I have spent the last 50 something days doing LOTS of research and reading. We had the x-ray and knew we were expecting 2 pups, we were also told pup #2 was big and may cause problems so needless to say, I was extremely nervous. I couldn't handle something bad happening to my baby much less one of hers!
Puppy on slid right out, Payton immediately broke the sack, chewed the cord and was working on getting the placenta out. Pup wasn't moving, no sound and couldn't see any breathing. I grabbed "it" (didn't know the sex yet and 1st priority was getting it to squeal). I suctioned it's nose and mouth, put it in a towel and rubbed. I think I started to cry when SHE did, we had a little 6 ounce girl, sqealing and squirmming. I gave her back to her mom, it didn't last long though, pup #2 was coming.
Feet first of course, and it's sack busted, it was stuck. Little back paws kicking. I grasped it with a towel and with the other hand applied lots of KY, *bloop* out it came. Again, instinct took over, mom cleaned and chewed cord...this one came out squirming and squealing....what a set of lungs! Grabbed pup to finish cleaning HIM... 5 ounce little boy. Tied off the cords on both pups (didn't know if I still needed to being that she chewed the cords, figured better safe than sorry..did I do the right thing?)
Mom and both pups are doing fantastic. She's not as aggresive now. She will allow me or hubby to sit by the box and even pet her but she's still VERY protective of the babies. She didn't want to take any food or water unless I give it to her by hand...is that normal? She also seems to be panting like she's hot or thirsty but won't take anymore water..is this something I should worry about?
So so sorry this is so long, I'm just SO excited for her, what a great mommy she's turned out to be!!!! |
