First, sorry to hear that but glad you weren't home.
I know a whole lot on these space saver bags! I have absolutely no storage room in my house (no closets). These bags are good at keeping the bugs and the smell out.
I do not recommend getting the biggest bags they have. Since you mentioned your garage, I assume you will be using that as storage room.
Go ahead and buy rubbermade totes that the bags will fit in.
Yes, I know you are trying to cut down on space, but it does help. Compare 5 or more totes without bags to 2 or so with and they also stack nicer! You can stack 2-3 bags in a tote depending on which size you get.
Also, someone mentioned on here about the bags opening. As long as you don't overstuff them (there is a line marked on them that shows where to stop) or move them around a whole lot you should be fine.

Sorry I've gone on and on, but like I've said, I've got experience with them!
