Yes it can go in the back or front seat and they can look out the window since it's high up. I actually put all 3 of mine in it yesterday and they were side to side, close together but they all fit so it would be fine for a short ride. But it's better to have just 2 if they want to spread out on it and sleep for a long ride, so i think a medium is good for your little ones
