Print your boarding pass at home and totally bypass the ticket counter. Go from the door of the airport right to security. TSA doesn't care at all.
On the trips a few years ago when I did pay for Gracie, I was never given a receipt, tags, ticket, etc. for her---she didn't even show on my boarding pass. The extra money I paid only showed on my credit card bill a month later. Her carrier is tiny and looks like a purse. No one has ever questioned me getting on a plane--and I fly with her about 12 times a year.
