Sure you can mark albums and sub albums private or public. Go to account options. This is on the top right next to your user name. You can still send links even though the account is marked private, they just can't look through all of your pictures.
After you set up the account options, you go to the Main Album and "edit" which is on the left hand side, it will show all your albums and you can mark the public or private.
