Hi.

My little Muffin used to get tonsillitis if she got too cold at night. She would wake up with a cough that wouldn't stop. Initially, she was treated with antibiotics. After that happened, I would catch it as soon as it occurred and give her a little benedryl and it would go away. She had it all of her life.

I have no idea, though, if that could be your problem. Just a thought.

I don't believe your last paragraph would happen. I can't see a little dog coughing for attention, but I could be wrong.
