I'm not American, but your story reminds me of something my grandpa told me when I was just 5 or 6 years old. He fought in WWII, but would never ever talk about it. One day he told my brother and I out of the blue "Don't EVER join the army no matter what they tell you it's like" and I remember thinking at the time "Who would want to join the army and shoot people?" but when I got to be 16 and 17 years old, recruiters were out in full force at high schools and career fairs and college campuses. They'd tell us it's just 2 weeks of service each summer and your whole tuition would be paid, you get to travel the world and get so many benefits and blah blah blah. But no matter what, my grandpa's voice always stuck in my head.
